The quick read: The District of Summerland rescinded its last evacuation orders tied to the Bald Range wildfire on October 1 — nearly two months after the fire tore through. Around 150 structures were damaged or destroyed. The hardest-hit properties moved to a prohibit-entry order while hazard cleanup continues. Recovery, not rescue, is now the job.
After nearly two months of exile, Summerland is finally coming home.
On October 1, the District of Summerland rescinded its last evacuation orders tied to the Bald Range wildfire, the Canadian Press reported.
The fire roared through in early August, forcing thousands to flee and claiming the life of an 80-year-old woman.
Around 150 structures were damaged or destroyed, mostly in rural areas — a preliminary count officials expect will be confirmed, not reduced, as assessments finish.
For the hardest-hit properties, the District transitioned evacuation orders to a prohibit-entry order on September 30, keeping the burned zones closed while hazard assessments, utility repairs, and debris cleanup continue.
The order covers dozens of addresses concentrated in Garnet Valley, Prairie Valley and Meadow Valley, where crews are still clearing dangerous trees and restoring power.
The rest of Summerland remains under an evacuation alert, meaning residents must still be ready to leave on short notice.
The conservative read: wildfire recovery is where every promise made this summer gets tested.
Two months of displacement is a failure of prevention before it is a story of response.
Conservative Leader Lorne Doerkson, campaigning in the Okanagan last week, promised a dedicated wildfire response cabinet committee, new water bombers, and less bureaucracy around firefighting.
Summerland residents deserve more than matching-donation announcements from Victoria — they deserve a province that clears fuel, equips its crews, and rebuilds fast.
Watch what happens on the rebuilding file over the coming months.
