Kidnapped in the Lower Mainland, Held Against Their Will in Kelowna |
RCMP say the victim was targeted as leverage against an associate — and the suspect is already back on the street |
Listen to this story:
The quick read: Kelowna RCMP's Serious Crime Unit is investigating an alleged kidnapping in which a person was taken in the Lower Mainland, transported to Kelowna, and held against their will — apparently to pressure one of the victim's associates. Officers responded to the 400-block of Sands Court around 11:30 p.m. on September 28 after a report of suspicious circumstances. The victim escaped and contacted police, and was treated for non-life-threatening injuries. Police say the victim is not believed to be involved in criminal activity, and the kidnapping is believed to have been targeted. On September 29, officers executed a search warrant at a Sands Court residence with the Southeast District Emergency Response Team. One man was taken into custody and later released pending further investigation. RCMP's October 2 release announced no charges, identified no one, and publicly linked the case to nothing. The investigation continues — and so does the uneasy feeling that this kind of crime is no longer someone else's problem.
A person was allegedly kidnapped in the Lower Mainland, transported to Kelowna, and held against their will — and the details should unsettle anyone who thinks that kind of crime happens somewhere else.
Kelowna RCMP were called to the 400-block of Sands Court around 11:30 p.m. on September 28 after a report of suspicious circumstances.
Officers learned that an individual alleged they had been taken in the Lower Mainland, brought to Kelowna, and held at a nearby residence.
The victim escaped and found help contacting police, and was assessed and treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
The Serious Crime Unit has taken over the investigation and is working with policing agencies in the Lower Mainland to corroborate the victim's account and gather evidence.
Investigators believe the kidnapping was targeted, and police say the victim is not believed to be involved in criminal activity.
Instead, RCMP allege the victim was being used to exert pressure on one of the victim's associates.
On September 29, officers executed a search warrant at a residence on Sands Court with the assistance of the Southeast District Emergency Response Team.
One man was taken into custody — and then released pending further investigation.
Police announced no charges in their October 2 release and did not identify the man who was detained.
They have also not publicly linked the investigation to organized crime.
Read that sequence again: an alleged kidnapping victim held in a Kelowna neighbourhood, and the detained suspect walks out mid-investigation.
Police say release decisions follow the evidence — and to be fair, a rushed charge that collapses helps no one.
But residents are allowed to notice the pattern: targeted violent crime migrating into the valley, and a justice system that keeps returning suspects to the street while investigations grind on.
The RCMP did solid work here — fast response, the victim safe, the Serious Crime Unit on the file.
Now the question is whether the system behind them can finish the job. |
