Listen to this story:

The quick read: Kelowna International Airport switched on a new LED airfield lighting system this week, replacing aging infrastructure across the runway, taxiway, approaches, and signage. The airport says the upgrade cost more than $9 million, paid entirely from airport revenues and reserves — no tax impact. CEO Sam Samaddar says the brighter, more precise lights make the airfield more visible to pilots, especially during wildfire smoke events and low-visibility conditions.

If you noticed something brighter on the flight path this week, you weren't imagining it.

Kelowna International Airport switched on a brand-new LED airfield lighting system this week, modernizing aging infrastructure across the runway, taxiway, approaches, signage, and control systems.

The old systems were more than 20 years old and nearing the end of their design life, according to the airport's project documents.

The upgrade includes high-intensity runway edge lighting, upgraded approach lighting on both runways, and new PAPI guidance systems, among other replacements.

"The transition to LED airfield lighting delivers two important benefits for YLW: enhanced safety and improved energy efficiency," said Sam Samaddar, CEO of Kelowna International Airport.

Samaddar says the brighter, more precise lighting makes the runway and airfield environment more visible to pilots — particularly during wildfire smoke events and low-visibility conditions, which Kelowna knows plenty about.

One heads-up for neighbours: the community may notice a new array of five flashing lights at each end of the runway.

The airport says these are a normal part of the upgraded system, not a sign of an emergency or hazard — they help pilots identify the runway more easily.

The price tag: over $9 million.

And here's the part worth underlining: the airport says the project was paid through airport revenues and reserves, with no taxation impact to the public.

That's how infrastructure should be funded — by the users, not the tax base.

The lighting upgrade is one piece of a much bigger growth story at YLW, which is in the middle of a roughly $360 million expansion through 2033, including its largest terminal expansion to date.

Separately, the airport's Fall Travel Show runs today, October 17, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the KF Centre for Excellence — a free, family-friendly event for trip planners.

And if you fly YLW regularly, here's a small point of pride: the airport's newly renovated Ellison Field Taphouse Kitchen & Bar was just named "Airport Bar or Pub of the Year" at the global FAB awards in Bengaluru, India.

Nine million dollars, no tax dollars, safer skies.

That's a trade any taxpayer can live with.
