Listen to this story:

The quick read: Natasha Marie Saari, a 42-year-old Kelowna resident, pleaded guilty to 16 of 28 charges after a fraud spree that included a stolen Audi, a vanished rental truck, and $40,000 in sports memorabilia. Her sentence: one year of house arrest, then a curfew. The judge himself called it "extraordinarily lenient."

The details read like a crime novel. The ending reads like a punchline nobody is laughing at.

Natasha Marie Saari, 42, also known as Natasha Akins, ran a fraud spree across Kelowna starting in June 2024, according to iNFOnews.

The toolkit: aliases, stolen credit cards and IDs, and fake Facebook profiles.

The haul: a rented Dodge Ram that was never returned, with its plates swapped. A $724 Botox treatment she simply walked out on. An Audi stolen through a Facebook Marketplace test drive. Forty thousand dollars in sports memorabilia lifted from a rented VRBO.

She pleaded guilty to 16 of 28 charges, including fraud, forged documents, theft, and breaching release orders.

For all of that, she received one year of full-time house arrest, followed by a year of 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. curfew.

No jail. Not a day.

Judge Andrew Tam called the sentence "extraordinarily lenient" and accepted it anyway, because judges are largely bound to accept joint Crown-defence submissions.

Read that again. The judge found his own ruling too soft, and the system gave him no choice.

Her co-accused, Chadwick Earl Milnthorp, goes to trial in January.

This is what a two-tier justice system looks like in practice. Sixteen convictions and the message to every would-be fraudster in the Okanagan is: the worst case is Netflix at home.

Victims get paperwork. Offenders get house arrest. That is not justice, it is administration.
