Listen to this story:

The quick read: Around 8:45 p.m. Friday, a car smashed through the front gate of Kangaroo Creek Farm on Old Vernon Road in Kelowna. The farm posted video of the incident to Facebook: the car immediately turned around, drove back through the wrecked gate, and fled southbound on Old Vernon Road. The farm says police had located the suspected driver by about 10 p.m. the same night. The farm also says the driver narrowly avoided catastrophe — had the car been slightly further to the right, it would have struck a beam set in concrete, which the farm says would have killed the passenger. The vehicle's make and model were not identified, and the motive is unknown. Castanet, which broke the story, says it reached out to Kelowna RCMP for comment. No injuries to people or animals were reported in the story, and the farm's operating status wasn't stated.

A Friday night drive past one of Kelowna's best-known family attractions ended with a smashed gate and a fleeing driver.

Around 8:45 p.m. on Friday, a car drove through the front gate of Kangaroo Creek Farm on Old Vernon Road.

The farm posted video of the incident to Facebook, and the footage tells the whole strange story: the car rammed the gate, immediately turned around, drove back through the broken entrance, and fled southbound on Old Vernon Road.

According to the farm, police had located the suspected driver by about 10 p.m. that same night — quick work worth noting.

The farm also says the driver narrowly avoided something far worse than property damage.

Had the car been slightly further to the right, it would have struck a beam set in concrete — and the farm says the impact would have killed the passenger.

That detail turns a bizarre hit-and-run into something closer to a miracle: whoever was in that car walked away from a crash that should have been much, much worse.

The vehicle make and model have not been identified, and the motive is unknown.

Castanet, which first reported the story, says it reached out to Kelowna RCMP for comment.

No injuries to people or animals were reported, and the farm has not said whether operations are affected.

A few honest observations.

Kangaroo Creek Farm is one of those rare local gems — a family-run attraction that has given Kelowna kids something they'll tell their own kids about.

Smashing through its gate and driving off isn't just property damage; it's an attack on a place the whole valley is fond of.

And credit where it's due: locating a suspected driver within about an hour of a Friday-night hit-and-run is solid police work.

The part nobody can answer yet is the why.

An accident, a stolen car, something deliberate — until police speak, all we have is the video and the wrecked gate.

Watch for the RCMP's account: whether the suspected driver was arrested or released will say a lot about how seriously this one is taken.
