Listen to this story:
The quick read: The inaugural Okanagan Open pickleball tournament runs Thursday, October 15 through Sunday, October 18 in Vernon, bringing an estimated 300 competitors to the Vernon Pickleball Association's complex at Marshall Field for Western Canada's premier pickleball tournament, the VPA says. The Pickleball Canada-sanctioned event features amateur and Open divisions with a $10,000 prize purse, and part of the proceeds will help introduce pickleball into Vernon schools. It's the latest sign of a local sports boom: Kelowna opened new pickleball courts at Glenmore Recreation Park on October 8, and the valley already has three semi-pro teams.
The fastest-growing sport in North America is getting its biggest Okanagan stage yet.
The inaugural Okanagan Open pickleball tournament runs Thursday, October 15 through Sunday, October 18 in Vernon, hosted by the Vernon Pickleball Association at its pickleball complex at Marshall Field.
The VPA calls it Western Canada's premier pickleball tournament, with an estimated 300 competitors expected, including elite national talent. The event is sanctioned by Pickleball Canada and features both amateur divisions and an Open division with a $10,000 prize purse.
Here's what makes this worth noticing beyond the sport itself: the VPA is a volunteer-driven organization with more than 1,000 members. Nobody's city hall built this. A thousand volunteers built the facility, grew the membership, and organized the tournament.
And part of the proceeds go toward making pickleball accessible to youth, funding the program that introduces the sport into Vernon K-to-7 schools.
That's how strong communities get built: people organizing themselves, kids included, without waiting for a government program.
The timing fits the valley's pickleball boom. Kelowna opened new pickleball courts at Glenmore Recreation Park on October 8, and the Ultimate Pickleball League already has three semi-pro teams in the valley: Kelowna's Krush, Penticton's Pursuit, and Vernon's Vortex.
Spectators are welcome, and tournaments like this fill hotel rooms, restaurants, and wineries across the valley. Four days of competition means real visitor dollars in Vernon.
If you're curious about the sport your neighbours won't stop talking about, this weekend is the showcase.
