Listen to this story:

Radon is colourless, odourless and completely tasteless — and long-term exposure is the leading cause of lung cancer among non-smokers.

The Central Okanagan is considered a high-risk area for elevated radon levels.

Which is exactly why the Regional District of Central Okanagan is bringing back its free radon test kit program.

Registration opened October 1, and 270 kits are available across the Central Okanagan — with support from Interior Health, Take Action on Radon, the BC Centre for Disease Control and participating local governments.

Only one kit per property, distributed evenly across communities, so early registration matters.

Here's how it works: pick up your kit between November 2 and 6 at your selected local government office, run the test during the cold season — a minimum of 91 days — and return it by early March 2027 for lab processing.

Testing is the only way to know whether radon is present in your home or workplace — whether it's your first test or a follow-up after renovations or mitigation work.

Here's the conservative read: credit where it's due.

This is a small, voluntary, science-based program that helps families protect themselves without a mandate, a tax or a lecture.

No one's forcing you to test — but ignoring an invisible carcinogen in your own home is a strange kind of optimism.

Demand for the kits is expected to be high.

If yours is one of the homes sitting on radon, you'll want to be the one who knows.
